The South Bend Tribune from South Bend, Indiana (2024)

Associated Press Chris Wright scored a career-high 27 points to lead the 11th-seeded Flyers to a 68-60 win over sixth-seeded West Virginia on Friday in the first round of the Midwest Regional. Charles Little added 18 points for Dayton (27-7), which had been 1-13 against the Mountaineers to days storming up and down the Cincinnati sideline. Darryl Bryant had 21 points and Devin Ebanks added 14 points and 12 rebounds for West Virginia (23-12). Kansas 84, North Dakota State 74: Sherron Collins and Cole Aldrich kept Kansas from being bumped off early by the North Dakota State Bison. Collins scored a season-high 32 points and went basket for basket with NDSU star Ben Woodside, and Aldrich had 23 points to help the defending NCAA champions hold off the 14th-seeded Bison (26-7).

Woodside played all 40 minutes and scored 37 points. Southern Cal 69, Boston College 55: Taj Gibson was a perfect 10 for Southern California, and way out of Boston league. Gibson had 24 points on 10- for-10 shooting from the field, sending the 10th-seeded Trojans past Boston College. Dwight Lewis had 20 points and DeMar DeRozan added 18 points and nine rebounds for USC (22-12), which kept up its momentum from last Pac-10 tournament title. Michigan State 77, Robert Morris 62: Raymar Morgan scored 16 points and Goran Suton had 11 points and 17 rebounds as Michigan State bullied 15th-seeded Robert Morris.

Draymond Green added 16 points for the second-seeded Spartans (27-6). Michigan State will play 10th-seeded USC on Saturday. Jeremy Chappell was the only player in double figures with 11 for Robert Morris (24-11). Louisville 74, Morehead State 54: The NCAA top team had a few early missteps, but Louisville uncoiled its full-court press in the second half and rolled to victory over Morehead State (21-16) that completed 25 years of perfection by No. 1 seeds.

Samardo Samuels led Louisville (29-5) with 15 points. Terrence Williams, who danced a little prematurely at midcourt before the game, added 13 points and nine rebounds. Kenneth Faried had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Morehead State. Siena 74, Ohio State 72, 2OTs: Ronald Moore hit a 3- pointer with 3.9 seconds left in the second overtime from the identical spot he made one at the end of the first OT as the Saints beat eighth-seeded Ohio State. two clutch shots advanced ninth-seeded Siena (27-7) into second round where the Saints will meet Louisville, the top team.

Evan Turner missed a leaner from 15 feet that would forced a third OT for the Buckeyes (22-11), who blew an 11-point lead in the second half of regulation. Arizona 84, Utah 71: Nic Wise scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half, Chase Budinger added 20 and the 12th-seeded Wildcats one of the last teams into the field of 65 knocked off fifth- seeded Utah in the first round of the Midwest Regional. Jordan Hill added 17 points and 13 rebounds for Arizona (20-13). Tyler Kepkay scored 19 points for Utah (24-10), which was 8-for-32 from 3-point range and matched a season- high with 20 turnovers. Cleveland State 84, Wake Forest 69: Some 23 years later, Cleveland State still has a knack for first-round shockers in the NCAA tournament.

The Vikings (26-10) raced to an early 17-point lead and stunned one-time No. 1-ranked Wake Forest. The win was reminiscent of the only other appearance in the tournament in 1986, when they upset Indiana in the opening round. No. 4 Wake Forest (24-7) lost in its first tournament game since 2005.

Norris Cole scored 22 points for the Vikings, who committed only six turnovers to 18 for Wake Forest. WEST REGIONAL Marquette 58, Utah State 57: Lazar Hayward scored 26 points and the Golden Eagles made 10 straight free throws down the stretch to hold off the Aggies. Marquette blew a 14-point lead, then rallied from a six- point deficit to win. Jerel McNeal and Wesley Matthews each scored 14 points for sixth-seeded Marquette (25-9). Missouri 78, Cornell 59: Once Missouri started moving, the buckets started falling for DeMarre Carroll and the rest of the Tigers.

Carroll, the nephew, scored all but two of his 13 points in the second half to help the Tigers pull away from Cornell. Leo Lyons finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers (29-6), who returned to the tournament for the first time in six years. SOUTH REGIONAL Syracuse 59, Stephen F. Austin 44: Jonny Flynn scored 16 points, Rick Jackson and Arinze Onuaku each added 12 and the third-seeded Orange beat the Lumberjacks. Paul Harris had a game-high 16 rebounds and Eric Devendorf scored 10 points for Syracuse (27-9), which ran out to a 20-4 lead and eased to its first NCAA win in five years.

The Orange will meet Arizona State Sunday. Arizona State 66, Temple 57: James Harden made only one field goal Friday for Arizona State, and it was a big one. The Sun scoring leader struggled most of the game but sank a 3-pointer with 4:02 left to help hold off Temple. Harden went 1-for-8 and was held to nine points, less than half his average. But junior Derek Glasser scored a career- high 22 points and Jeff Pendergraph also had 22 for the Sun Devils (25-9), who shot 51 percent.

EAST REGIONAL Pittsburgh 72, East Tennessee State 62: massive center DeJuan Blair bullied his way inside for 27 points and 16 rebounds as the Panthers (29-4), playing their first game as a top seed in the NCAA tournament, survived a frightful 40 minutes from No. 16 seed East Tennessee State. Kevin Tiggs scored 21 for the Buccaneers (23-11), who shot just 31 percent but still had a chance to become the first No. 16 to down a No. 1 until the final two minutes.

Oklahoma State 77, Tennessee 75: After 40 minutes of give-no-ground basketball, everything opened up for Byron Eaton. Oklahoma barrel- chested point guard found a clear path to the basket for a three-point play with 7.2 seconds left, sending the Cowboys (23-11) the victory. Tennessee (21-13) saw its chance to win bounce off the side of the rim and then off the top of the backboard as the buzzer sounded. Xavier 77, Portland State 59: C.J. Anderson scored 14 points and Xavier shot 54 percent from the field to advance to the second round for the third straight year.

The Musketeers (26-7) stifled Portland usual barrage of 3-pointers and showed they could shoot from the outside, too, making eight of 19 tries and going 29-for-54 overall in their East Regional opener. Wisconsin 61, Florida State 59, OT: Trevon Hughes banked in a spinning shot over two defenders for a three-point play with 2 seconds left in overtime to lift the Badgers. Hughes, who had his hands full covering Seminoles star Toney Douglas all game, then capped Friday game by batting away Florida desperation pass at the end and the Badgers (20-12) mobbed him at halfcourt to celebrate the victory. Douglas finished with 26 points, not a single one of them easy, thanks to huge defensive work. Jason Bohannon led Wisconsin with 16 points.
